The Democrats agreed with Bush on an economic stimulus plan today. It includes tax rebates and
"a robust package of business incentives.snip
To get to the agreement, Democrats dropped calls for increases in food stamps and an extension of unemployment compensation."
John Edwards criticized the Democratic sellout of working people and collaboration with Bush
"This is another example of Washington deserting working people and the middle class."
Edwards Statement On The Economic Stimulus Package Before Congress
John Edwards was the first to propose an economic stimulus plan on December 22, 2007. He called for Congress to act immediately to pass at least a $25 billion jobs plan in early 2008 and be ready to pass $75 billion more if there is more evidence that we are entering a recession.
Key to his plan was to accelerate Our Investment in Clean Energy:
The crisis of global warming and the high cost of energy require us to invest in a new infrastructure as the foundation for a new clean energy economy. Building this infrastructure will create jobs and spark economic activity, while also investing in our nation's long-term prosperity.

Edwards' plan also called for increasing federal aid to help states avoid cutting programs that help families through hard times, reforming unemployment insurance and tackling the housing crisis.
Economist and columnist Paul Krugman praised the Edwards plan:
On the Democratic side, John Edwards, although never the front-runner, has been driving his party's policy agenda. He's done it again on economic stimulus: last month, before the economic consensus turned as negative as it now has, he proposed a stimulus package including aid to unemployed workers, aid to cash-strapped state and local governments, public investment in alternative energy, and other measures.
Today, John Edwards urged Congress to stand its ground and not capitulate on the economy as they have done on the war in Iraq so often:
"This is another example of Washington deserting working people and the middle class. They gave $70 billion of tax breaks that do nothing for those who've lost their jobs.
It's a complete disconnect between what's happening in Washington and what I see happening here in South Carolina and across the country. We desperately need a modernization of the unemployment insurance law to cover more poor families and those who have lost their jobs. We also need to build an infrastructure for the clean energy economy that will create jobs and fight global warming.
"George Bush will sign whatever economic stimulus package that is sent to him by the Congress. The Congress needs to stand its ground. They need to insist on unemployment insurance modernization. Because otherwise we're going to have thousands and thousands of families across this country who don't get the unemployment help they need, and they lost their jobs through no fault of their own."
Martin Luther King III said in a letter this week that Edwards needs to keep fighting injustice:
Dear Senator Edwards:It was good meeting with you yesterday and discussing my father's legacy. On the day when the nation will honor my father, I wanted to follow up with a personal note.

So, I urge you: keep going. Ignore the pundits, who think this is a horserace, not a fight for justice. My dad was a fighter.
As a friend and a believer in my father's words that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, I say to you: keep going. Keep fighting. My father would be proud.
Sincerely,
Martin L. King, III

"Congress must quickly pass a stimulus package that helps those who need it most and will spend it the fastest. And it should include public investments that will create jobs and move us toward a 21st century, clean energy economy."
Please sign it.
Congress is making a decision as early as this week about a short-term economic stimulus plan. But Bush is pushing a plan that gives even more tax breaks to the wealthy--and leaves middle-class and poor families out in the cold.
